Moving from the city to the suburbs

Monthly Archives: August 2012

Looking through fall lookbooks, I’m finding myself more and more attracted to gold and brass jewelry options I may have passed over last year. One particular find I’m excited about is jewelry designer Vanessa Mooney. I recently stumbled upon her designs at Standard Style (a fashion haven in Kansas unlike any other). I like the raw and edgy nature of her pieces – plus, I love that she mixes in affordable and high-end options in her collection. If that longhorn necklace is not bought by the end of August, it will be a miracle (or a tragedy, I can’t decide which is better).

I wouldn’t label myself one for celebrity gawking, but these two recent haircuts from Miley Cyrus and Jessica Alba received second glances from me. I think you either love ’em or hate ’em and I must say… I’m feeling the styles these two ladies are brave enough to rock. What do you think?

Boots and bouquets of sharpened pencils are the staples of fall for me. As yellow school buses begin to populate the suburban streets, I can’t help but be get a tad nostalgic for school days. I love grown-up office supplies and plan to furnish my one-day home office with color-coordinated files and ridiculous pink post-its. Here is some adult back to school inspiration for you:

1. Kid Made Modern Small Pencils 2. Knot & Bow: Assorted Library Cards 3. Trash Things: Bubblegum Pink Apple Ice Bucket

4. Vintage Estonian Portable Typewriter 5. Kid Made Modern Solid Tape 6. Cloud & Clover: Pencils

Bonus: Everytime I think about back to school time now, this commercial from Target makes me burst out laughing (even when I’m just singing the song in my head.) Warning! If you watch this video, you will most likely be singing the song in your head, too…

I’ve been at my job now for over four years – man, does make me feel old! I started work the day after I graduated (literally) and have been on one hell of a fun ride ever since. I had the chance to come back to Chicago this week for work and a beautiful little surprise was waiting for me to celebrate my 4th year anniversary at my job.

Keeping my job and working remotely has made the transition to the suburbs so much easier. It’s always fun to come back to visit  and this week is no different. City shopping…cabs… oh and an office 80’s party tomorrow! If you’re lucky, you may get a peek at my god-awful glam rock grunge outfit tomorrow…

mojito recipe

Awhile back, I took a really fun mixology class at Nacional 27. I mixed up an extra-special Mojito with the help of their bartender. However, I couldn’t tell you (or myself for that matter) how to make it again, so I found a simple recipe from Bacardi’s Facebook page to try over the weekend:

  • 2 parts BACARDI Superior Rum
  • 12 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 lime in wedges
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup or sugar
  • Club Soda
  • Crushed Ice
  • Sprig of fresh mint to garnish

  1. Muddle 12 fresh mint leaves & 1/2 lime.
  2. Cover with 2 tablespoons simple syrup or sugar; top with ice.
  3. Add Bacardi Rum & top with club soda.
  4. Stir well & garnish with a sprig of mint & a lime.
